🚗 Understanding Class and Object in C++

🧠 Introduction

Have you ever wondered how programming can mimic real life?
That’s exactly what Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) does in C++.

It helps us write code that feels real, organized, and logical — just like how we think about the world around us.

Two of the most important concepts in OOP are:
👉 Class and 👉 Object

Let’s take a simple, real-world example to understand this —
A Car!

Every car you see around you — BMW, Audi, or Toyota — has:

  • Properties (like color, brand, speed)

  • Behaviors (like starting, accelerating, braking)

Let’s see how these ideas become code in C++ 👇


🏗️ What is a Class?

A Class is like a blueprint or a design.

Think about a car company designing a new model — say, Fortuner.
The design sheet defines how every Fortuner will look and behave.
But this design itself isn’t a real car, right?

That’s exactly what a class is —
It defines the structure of an object but doesn’t create it yet.

It’s just a template that tells the computer:

“Hey! Every car will have some features (data) and some actions (functions).”


💻 Example: Defining a Class in C++

🧩 Explanation:

  • class Car → creates a new class named Car.

  • brand, color, and speed → are data members (properties of the car).

  • start() and accelerate() → are member functions (actions a car can perform).

💡 Remember:
At this point, no memory is used.
We’ve only made a design, not an actual car!


🚘 What is an Object?

An Object is a real instance of a class — a car built from the design!

Each object:

  • Has its own unique data

  • But follows the same structure defined in the class

Let’s create two car objects 👇


💻 Example: Creating and Using Objects

    Car car1;   // creating object car1
    Car car2;   // creating another object car2

    car1.brand = "BMW";
    car1.color = "Black";
    car1.speed = 200;

    car2.brand = "Toyota";
    car2.color = "White";
    car2.speed = 150;

    car1.start();
    car1.accelerate();

    car2.start();
    car2.accelerate();

    return 0;
}

🧠 Explanation:

  • Car car1; and Car car2; → create objects of the Car class.

  • Each object has its own copy of the class data:

    • car1 → BMW, Black, 200 km/h

    • car2 → Toyota, White, 150 km/h

  • Functions like start() and accelerate() act independently for each object.

So even though both car1 and car2 share the same structure,
their data (brand, color, speed) and behavior are different!

Let’s simplify it even more 👇

So when a company designs a car model, that’s a class.
Every real car produced from that design is an object.
